Storytelling

Storytelling, writing and comedy have been a part of my life for a long time.

As any effective public speaker will tell you, the ability to craft an effective story that people can see themselves in is a big part of creating connection with your audience, and ensuring people will remember what you’re trying to tell them.

“People are persuaded more by the depth of your conviction than by the height of your logic.”

This was a lesson pounded into me during my time at Toastmasters and on the sales floor.

Somewhere along the line of all this public speaking, sales and marketing training, I re-discovered a deep love of storytelling that I’d held since I was very young, reading Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman novels into the very late hours of the morning. The high stress environment of corporate sales drew me back into the power of fictional stories to help cope with the stresses of everyday life. Over the last 10 years, I have likely read near 1000 novels of various kinds – not all of them good – and re-realized a dream I’d had since I was a teenager.

That I also wanted to write, tell stories – and publish books.

No books have been published yet – as it turns out the publishing industry is pretty unprofitable for most authors. So instead I’ve turned to the Charles Dickens method of serialized fiction. Much easier to deploy, and a more immediate system of feedback on how well the stories are being received.

You can follow along with my current stories that follow an ambitious tax collector, over-confident street kids, reckless wizards and an aging adventurer looking to retire from the sword before he dies from it.
